Welcome to Ramela Ranch Volunteer program
Have you always wanted to work side-by-side with animals? Does the idea of patting a Cheetah or playing with a cub bring a smile on your face? Do you like to wander around in the African bush and look for wildlife? If you answered “yes” to these questions, then Mbidi Animal Sanctuary would be the perfect place for you to volunteer.
Ramela Ranch hosts a unique volunteer program that allows participants to work in close contact with the lions, cheetahs, tigers etc. Learn how to assist our trained staff in the care of the older lions - feeding, cleaning, maintaining the enclosures, and training sessions. Guide customers through encounters with our animals. Help nurse and nurture baby lion cubs as well as any other orphaned or injured animals we may be caring for at the moment.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF...
Wake up to the sound of lions roaring. Watch the sun rise above the valley as you start your day...
Weekdays at Mbidi start at 7:00 AM Staff meeting. Feeding of the small animals, birds and any baby cubs begins at 7:30. After morning feed, volunteers gather for tea and coffee and are assigned morning jobs, which may be anything from cleaning enclosures to doing fence walks and game spotting at Mbidi's sister property, Dikwena, to designing enrichment activities to helping keep the lodge grounds tidy and clean. Once morning jobs are finished, volunteers are free to spend time interacting with the animals or helping our handlers with training exercises. Lunch is 12-1 daily, except on Sundays. After lunch volunteers are off to do afternoon jobs and more interaction with the animals. The day ends at 4:00, and volunteers are free to swim, hike, hang out at the lodge restaurant or watch TV under the lapa while the sun sets.
In addition to regular feeding routines, weekends are dedicated to our customers. Volunteers will help do encounters, prepare for shows and assist around the lodges needed.
When you are not helping out at the sanctuary, we will take you out into the bush and teach you everything there is to know about our great wildlife. You will have the opportunity to go on game drives and walk on our sister property, Dikwena Lodge. See the giraffes feeding while they keep an eye on you, look for tracks of black-backed jackals and learn where the animals are going, just by looking at your surroundings.
We will teach you how to identify birds as we sit down at one of the lookout points, and what to do when you are lost. During your time here the bush will become your second home so that when you leave, you will have a great understanding of the African bush and everything that lives in it..Sounds like an adventure you would like to experience?
